What protective film cannot do: limits and alternatives

In short

Protective film is not heat protection, not a chopping board and not safety glass, and it seals nothing. On oiled or raw surfaces a loose pad fits better, for strongly curved parts a professional wrapper. We name these limits so you decide correctly.

A protective film absorbs signs of use, nothing more. Five things it does not replace and what you do instead in these cases.

Updated:

Dark wooden desk with a closed laptop, lamp and notebook, the surface covered with transparent film.

Heat: the trivet remains a must

The film is not heat protection. Hot pots, pans and baking trays belong on a trivet even with the film. We will only state a temperature once a data sheet backs it up; until then there is none, and we do not invent one.

That applies to the dining table just as to the worktop, including around the hob. The trivet is the solution, not the thicker film.

Heat and cutting

Knives and cutting: the board stays

Cutting is done on a board. A knife also leaves cuts in the film, and they stay. Premium Clear is only self-healing for fine, superficial scratches, not for deep cuts.

In addition, blades are not part of caring for the film. Water, a soft cloth and a mild cleaner are enough for cleaning.

Care

Glass: surface protection, not safety glass

On glass the film is suitable. It protects the surface from signs of use but is not a shatter-protection film. It does not hold a cracked pane together, and we do not promise that. It does not replace safety glass.

Wetness: nothing gets sealed

You wipe splashes off the film as you would off the surface itself. Permanently wet surfaces, shower areas and joints, however, are not where it belongs: the film seals nothing.

After application also do not clean the surface wet for 24 hours so that the adhesive can hold fully.

Bathroom furniture

When the surface does not fit: pad, wrapper, trim

Oiled, waxed and raw tops do not carry a film. A loose pad or table cover that only lies on the surface fits there. It remains visible as a second layer and can be removed at any time.

Strongly curved, three-dimensionally shaped parts such as wings cannot be applied wrinkle-free from a flat cut. They belong in the hands of a professional wrapper. We do not cover displays, controls or anything that touches airbags, sensors or cameras.

For the loading edge, trim can be the better choice. Which solution fits when is explained in the article on it.

Loading edge: film or trim

Self-healing has a limit

Premium Clear and High Gloss even out fine, superficial scratches in their surface. They do not even out deep cuts, and under which conditions exactly the self-healing works, for example at which room temperature or in what time, is not proven. That is why we name none.

So the film is no free pass for every load. It absorbs signs of use, and with the two self-healing films fine scratches disappear. We promise no more.

Sun and lifespan: statements we do not make

We make no statement on the effect of direct sun on the film or on lifespan in figures because we do not have a data sheet with a test standard. Anyone who needs such a promise, for example for a window sill in the sun, would rather get the honest answer from us that it is still outstanding.

As soon as there are proven values, they belong on the product pages. Until then the sample set helps: you see the film on your surface and decide with your own eyes.

How to decide in three steps

First: what do you need the protection for? The film covers signs of use such as putting things down, shifting and rubbing, but not heat, cuts and constant wetness. Second: does the surface fit? Smooth and closed yes, oiled, raw or rough no. Third: do you need a firm bond or a removable solution?

If the answers point to film, our configurator fits. If they point to another solution, that is a good result too: we would rather sell you the right film than one that comes off.

What the film does well

So that no wrong impression arises: the film absorbs what happens every day, namely putting things down, shifting and rubbing. On smooth, closed surfaces you hardly see it, and it can be removed again later.

That is exactly what it is made for. Anyone who knows these limits is satisfied with it; anyone who expects more should choose another solution beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Does the film protect against hot pots?

No. It is not heat protection. Hot pots belong on a trivet.

Can I cut on the film?

No, a knife leaves cuts there too. Cut on a board.

Does the film hold a cracked glass top together?

No. It is not a shatter-protection film and does not replace safety glass.

How do I know whether my surface fits?

Smooth and closed means suitable. If in doubt, a photo, the sample set or the assistant helps.
